As I Have Loved You (original)
“AS I HAVE LOVED YOU”
John 13:1–17; 34–35
Artist's Reflection
John tells us that Jesus knew the Father had given all things into His hands.
All things.
And what did He do with those hands?
He took a towel.
He poured water into a basin.
And He washed the feet of His disciples.
The Lord of all lowered Himself before those He had come to save.
He knew where He had come from.
He knew where He was going.
He knew what awaited Him.
And He loved them.
Later that evening, He gave them a new commandment:
“Love one another: as I have loved you.”
He had not merely told them what love should look like.
He had knelt before them and shown them.
And soon, He would demonstrate a love greater still.
The One who held all things in His hands
had used those hands to wash their feet.
And then He told them:
“As I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”
