About the Artist

My name is Joshua Kendrick, and I am a self-taught Christian artist working primarily in white pastel on black paper.

My work begins with Scripture.

Rather than simply illustrating familiar biblical scenes, I try to spend time with the text and search for the quieter moments within it—the expression, gesture, perspective, or detail that might cause someone to stop and look again.

Working on black paper has become an important part of that process. I begin with darkness and use light sparingly, allowing much of the image to remain unseen. Faces disappear into shadow. Figures emerge only where they need to. Sometimes a small area of light carries the weight of the entire piece.

That restraint has become part of the way I tell these stories.

I have no formal art-school training. My work has developed over more than two decades of drawing, experimenting, failing, learning, and continuing to refine my craft. In recent years, my faith and my art have become inseparable.

Each piece is accompanied by an Artist’s Reflection—a brief meditation on the Scripture and thought that inspired the work. These reflections are not intended to explain every detail of the image. My hope is that they point the viewer back to Scripture and allow the artwork to become a place to linger with it.

The name Sons of Bezalel comes from the craftsman Bezalel, whom Scripture describes as being filled by God with wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and skill for the work he was called to do.

That name is a reminder of what I want this work to remain:

A craft offered back to the One who gave it.
